Frieze 2023: New York
The Shed, New York
Tosh Basco
May17–May212023
Tosh Basco is a movement-based artist whose practice employs improvisation as a mode of survival and worldbuilding. Through images and language, Basco shows how the movement of form communicates what remains impenetrable. Often these gestures are captured as paintings, photographs, or works on paper in order to immortalize the visceral experience of live visual performance. For the 2023 edition of Frieze New York, Company Gallery presents an installation of new works on canvas by Basco. These large-scale abstractions are the physical and emotional imprints of movement, exploring the threshold between where becoming meets representation.
Other upcoming projects include Basco’s solo exhibition at the Rockbund Art Museum in Shanghai, China which will open Summer 2023. Her performance work, previously done under the name boychild, arose from the underground drag scene in San Francisco. Since then, she has performed in a variety of venues including museums, theaters, and nightclubs: amongst them are the Venice Biennale, the Sydney Biennial, the Whitney Museum of American Art, MoMA PS1, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, MOCA Los Angeles, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, ICA London, and Berghain. Basco has toured with Mykki Blanco, and collaborated with Korakrit Arunanondchai, Hood by Air, and Wu Tsang, whom she joined to continue the collaboration as Moved by the Motion at Schauspielhaus in Zürich.
