RAÚL DE NIEVES
Serpent in the Sky / Serpiente en el Cielo
ZONAMCO, Booth C205, February 7 – 11, 2018
Raúl de Nieves is a multi-media artist, performer, and musician. De Nieves’ work often develops its own intricate visual symbolism drawing on both classical Catholic and Mexican vernacular motifs to develop his own mythology. His work, particularly his performance, often challenges and explores sexuality, the human body, and individual and public history.
For his inaugural presentation at ZONAMACO, Mexico City, de Nieves premiers a new body of work, entitled Serpent in the Sky. The title purveys a poetic examination of the circular role of time in realms of cultural heritage, creative evolution, and personal transformation. A series of abstract wall works evoke images of a topographic landscape or a twisting maze. De Nieves’ laboriously handmade collages are composed of everyday material including tape, paper, glue, and beads. Of which, the primary material, colorful paper bits, are sourced from art-historical postcards. Images from modernist and impressionist masterpieces become material for something new.
Metamorphosis, a prominent theme in de Nieves’ work, continues through ornately composed beaded sculptures. High heel shoes and costumes resemble bejeweled coral. A large-scale, figurative sculpture entitled Mother, combines beads with fur and moss. A mirrored floor reveals the decadent surface of the forms. Together the objects embrace the generative process of growth, failure, and fear in nature in an optimistic vision of the future.
